Be it a formal dinner or a casual lunch, there a certain things that you have to do to ensure your guests feel comfortable and enjoyable. But if you’re making a finger licking recipe that you know will win your guests, why not plate it in a way such that your event becomes one to remember?

As a matter of fact, the effort needed to be able to do that, is not a rocket science. All that’s needed is a little extra effort to put together an attention-grabbing table. To help you out, I’ve put together a few steps that can smoothly take you through the entire process.

Begin with getting together all that’s needed

Make a list of the dishes you will be serving and the number of courses they’ll be served in. In fact, make a rough sheet of your menu. Pen down whether it will be a five or a seven course meal. It will help you decide on which dining range, cutlery collection, breakfast set, soup bowls, cake stand, etc to choose for the occasion.

Get your utensils together. Remember, you need to arrange your utensils in a way that you don’t have to run around for removing utensils from the table and placing fresh ones for another course. At the same time don’t overdo. If you think the plate will suffice for serving the fish and the roast, don’t overburden the table with separate plates for both of them.

Start arranging

Now arrange the utensils. If needed download a table setting template from the internet for guidance in arranging, or refer to the image below. A few things that you need to remember are:

The charger dish or the larger plate remains through the entire meal as a base for all courses. Its removed only when the entire meal is done.

The bread butter dish goes to the left of the charger dish.

The cloth or tissue napkin is placed on the top of the charger plates

The left of your charger plate also holds your fish fork, salad fork and entrée fork and the right of your charger plate holds the dinner knife, fish knife and the soup spoon, all in the same order as mentioned.

If you’re serving desert, you can add an additional desert fork on the left of the charger plate and a desert spoon on the right of it (last to the all other cutlery arranged in the point above).

The butter knife goes diagonal on the bread butter plate.

The wine glass and the water glass goes to the right of the charger plate just above the cutlery arrangement with the former closer to the charger plate and the latter behind it.

The soup bowl is placed upside-down on the right side of the charger plate beside the wine glass and the salad bowl on the left side of the charger plate.

Once done, the same pattern needs to be applied for all the guest seats.

FYI: Have an appealing vase of fresh colorful flowers as a center piece on the table to add to the ambiance of the meal.

Have your organized a meal with such preparations before? How did it turn out to be? Share your thoughts and experiences; we’d love to hear from you.
